Aim of inspection
The purpose of this vendor inspection (VI) was to sample the adequacy of AtkinsRéalis’s arrangements, established in its management system, for the supply of nuclear safety related services to the GB nuclear industry.
The Energy Act 2013 establishes ONR as the enforcing authority for section 6 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (HSWA74). One of the methods ONR uses to meet this responsibility is to conduct inspections of companies in the GB nuclear supply chain. These inspections are known as vendor inspections (VIs), and ONR coordinates these via an annual VI programme. This inspection of AtkinsRéalis is a vendor inspection in the programme.

AtkinsRéalis provides engineering design consultancy to the nuclear industry and so their own staff, and any they obtain from contractors, must be competent to perform the services they supply.
The ONR inspection team examined AtkinsRéalis’s approach to competence management by conducting discussions with key personnel and reviewing processes and records.
AtkinsRéalis demonstrated a sound strategic approach to competence management that was in place and working.
AtkinsRéalis also demonstrated a sound strategic approach to procuring services from suppliers who are competent that was in place and working.

Conclusion
The Inspection Team judged that AtkinsRéalis was meeting relevant good practice with only a few observations to consider as opportunities for improvement. A green rating is justified by the evidence.
