Dounreay improvement notice extended

The Office for Nuclear Regulation has agreed to extend an improvement notice served on Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) following an incident at its Dounreay site in Caithness, Scotland.

The notice was served in April 2025 following an incident in which a radiological contamination monitor, weighing approximately two tonnes, overturned while being moved.

Although nobody was seriously harmed in the incident, ONR considers that it posed a significant risk to worker safety.

ONR is satisfied that NRS is making progress in addressing the shortfalls and has suitable interim arrangements in place for any upcoming handling activities.

NRS must now comply with the improvement notice by 24 October 2025.
